Thermostats PDF Print E-mail
The Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) has instituted a "Mercury-Containing Thermostat $5 Incentive Program."  All of the District's transfer stations participate in this program.  Bring a mercury-containing thermostat to your transfer station and receive a coupon for $5.00.  (TRC wants the whole thermostat, including the cover.)  For more information, click here.

Fluorescent Bulbs PDF Print E-mail
CFL bulbUsing fluorescent lighting is a great way to reduce energy consumption, thereby reducing mercury emissions from power plants -- making them a good choice for your wallet and the environment. But putting fluorescents in the trash is illegal in Vermont. This is because when the bulbs are broken, the mercury vapor in them is released into the atmosphere, comes down in rain, and contaminates our water resources. Because of mercury contamination, the State has issued warnings about eating fish from our lakes and rivers. To properly dispose of your fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescents (CFLs), and HID light bulbs, bring them to your local transfer station. As of the July 1, 2012, Vermont residents can bring in up to ten tubes per visit and an unlimited number of CFLs for FREE disposal thanks to a new law.

Aerosol Containers PDF Print E-mail
When containers still have product in them or are still under pressure, most are considered hazardous waste and should be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste collection.

Aerosol containers are steel cans; therefore, empty aerosol containers can be recycled with other metal cans in your transfer station's scrap metal pile.

Agricultural Plastic PDF Print E-mail
Ag plastics (bale wrap, plastic sheet mulch, etc.) should be managed as trash. Burning ag plastics or other types of farm garbage is strictly prohibited. And unfortunately, agricultural plastic is not recyclable at this time in our area.

Ammunition PDF Print E-mail
Ammunition cannot be brought to a Household Hazardous Waste collection. If the ammo is in useable condition, try to find someone who might use it--your police department, a gun shop, or a hunter. If the ammo is old, wet, or corroded, your police department should be able to take it or advise you on how to dispose of it.
