Ashes, wood or coal, can go in the trash if they are cold and bagged. There is a tremendous fire hazard in transporting them, so every precaution must be taken that the ash is stone cold. Wetting ashes down before disposal is strongly recommended. In small quantities, ashes from raw lumber and clean wood can make a good amendment to compost.
